FAQ: Community of Magic Pens Anthology
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

I'm new to Kickstarter and don't understand it. Can you give me a rundown?

Sure. We asking you to consider pre-ordering the book through this website, known as a “crowdfunding campaign.” We are doing this to raise money to pay up-front costs, including author royalties and editing. Thank you for helping us do that - and we hope you love the book that you receive in return.

Here’s what you do: 1) Click the “reward level” to the right. If you just want a paperback copy, you’ll select “paperback” 2) Check out of Kickstarter - you can do this with an account or as a guest. You need to check out to complete the pre-order.

Don’t hesitate to message us with any questions. And thank you!

How do you know you'll get enough good submissions?

For our last collection, we had enough top-quality submissions to fill many books. For this one, I’m already seeing enough really great writers say on Twitter that they plan to submit to fill a whole book. I’m not worried about this at all. Honestly, my biggest worry is the emotion of having to tell people they will -not- be included, because that’s how competitive this will likely be.

Are you accepting submissions?

Yes - the project is submissions based. Guidelines are posted to atthisarts.com/magicpens - underrepresented writers are welcome - we are committed to presenting a collection that reflects the writing community. Submissions open 15 December and close 15 January.

I'm a writer who plans to submit a story and I don't know if I'll be accepted. Should I back this?

The point of this campaign is to raise money to fund the project and pay the writers. So this campaign is for readers and for people who want to help our goal of paying writers, whoever they will be. If you want a copy of the book to read, regardless of whether you’re in it, this campaign is for you. (And we appreciate your support!) If you are included in the book, you’ll have the opportunity to buy discounted copies later.

I personally back anthologies all the time without knowing if my story will be included (and it’s usually not!) - but again, I back them as a reader and supporter, not as a writer.

Whether one backs the campaign will have no bearing on the selection of stories. At all.

And no matter what, sharing the link with a message of support helps a ton! Thank you!

I paid shipping but wasn't asked for an address.

That’s ok. You’ll complete your checkout after the campaign is over. We’ll tell you how to do that. As long as you are confirmed as a backer, you’re good to go for now.

Why are the limited editions so expensive?

The limited editions are meant to raise money for the project, for people who want to provide that extra support. The paperback copies are set at a standard retail price. That said, small run hardcovers are getting increasingly expensive to produce. The challenges of indie publishing! And why we appreciate your support. : )

I enjoy Bell's writing - will she have a story?

I will! Some people don’t like when an editor participates in the collection, but, eh, it’s my party and I’m going to it. And, no, I don’t get paid. More specifically: 1) I think it’s fun for people to see what I do with the theme 2) From a practical standpoint, the most copies sold are by me at in-person events. Those people specifically ask if I have a story, and want the answer to be yes. And since those sales will help cover the costs this campaign doesn’t, I need to keep that avenue open.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
